“Imagine if you could do anything …” posits the trailer for the movie “The Covenant.” Yeah, just imagine that–how far back should I go? First, I’d give myself a better genetic makeup with more social skills and less I.Q., instead of being the emotional equivalent of the knuckle dragging missing link.Â
I’d pick a pair o’ parents closer to normal instead of a raging alcoholic and frozen codependent. (I grew up in Dysfunction Junction.) Then I’d arrange for my father to stay alive into old age, instead of popping off when I was 17.Â
Let’s see–what else? Different spouse? No spouse. If there’s a spouse, let’s make the partner supportive, faithful and lasting. Kids? No kids! Or, at least, one of them not be stillborn. Â
And then … well, if I could do anything, I’d be someone else, someone who probably wishes he could do anything and change into someone else.
I see this is a lot like answering, “What would you do if you won the lottery?” Wasted effort and time. Perhaps it is better to focus on making the best of what is, rather than wishing for what isn’t. Hey, that IS something I can do. Just imagine the positive benefits!

So true, Georganna. Thanks for the link, and the confirmation (for me), from another person, that I’m on the right track.
Positive benefits, indeed! I’d say now is a good time for counting blessings.
