In order to change, we must leave or expand our comfort zone. On July 20, 1969 Commander Neil Armstrong and Astronaut Edwin Aldrin left the earth and stood firmly on the moon.
They left the comfort of the earth to follow their dream to the moon. On Apollo 11 they cut through the unknown and uncharted spaces to land where no American has landed before-on the lunar surface. Armstrong and Aldrin explored the moon’s surface for 2 1/2 hours.
As I marveled over their courage and accomplishment, I began to realize clearly how far they went out of their comfort zone. Going from the Earth to the Moon confirms how far we can go, when we courageously choose to leave our comfort zone.
I want to tell you about some of Neil Armstrong’s quotes and how these quotations can motivate us to leave our comfort zone in the pursuit of our dreams.
“The important achievement of Apollo was demonstrating that humanity is not forever chained to this planet and our visions go further than that and our opportunities are unlimited”, said Astronaut, Neil Armstrong as he stepprd onto the moon.
If Neil Armstrong was talking about leaving our comfort zone, I believe he would say: We are not forever chained to our comfort zone and our visions go further than that and our opportunities are unlimited.
Think about it: WE ARE NOT CHAINED TO OUR COMFORT ZONE!
As he stepped onto the moon, Neil Armstrong said, “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon. We came in peace for all mankind.†Then he took the symbol of our freedom on earth and he placed the American flag on the moon. WOW, isn’t that exciting.
Lately, I have been encouraging my clients to take their comfort zone with them, when they pursue their dreams. I want them to symbolically raise their flag of freedom and comfort in their new territory.
For example, one of my clients has recently taken a new stressful position. She has been making the following affirmations and visualizations. She has been saying to herself “I am comfortable in my new position” and “I am in my comfort zone” when she is in her new position.
Another one of my client “can’t say no” and “can’t tell people how she really feels”. She is reconditioning her mind by saying “I am comfortable saying no” and “I am comfortable telling people how I feel”.
Don’t we have the right to consciously determine out comfort zones?
Perhaps Neil Armstrong’s most famous quotation was made when he stepped onto the moon. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Imagine you are like Neil Armstrong as you step out of your comfort zone. As you take that first step to extend your comfort zone, can you say “One small step for me, one giant step for the rest of my life”.
If Neil and Edwin could leave their comfort zone and go to the moon, can’t we expand our comfort zone one step at a time while remaining on earth?
As Alex Shalman wrote ” In my experience the only way to experience growth is to break out of your comfort zone”.
