Holly, I commend you for recognizing what we all need to remember - and that is - we are each responsible for our lives. Not a message promoted in our culture much, is it? What I find valuable about your post is the reminder - it's how we RESPOND to the tough things in life that tells on us. And it sounds like you are taking it a step further by planting different seeds for a different result. May the garden of your life continue to be dotted with daily miracles.

Wow. I found myself nodding in agreement most of the way through. There are few simple pleasures I enjoy more than the perfect roasted marshmallow done over the perfect bed of coals. About the last paragraph I stopped nodding as I had an "ah-ha moment," as Oprah would put it. This is what has been missing in my parenting. I have not seen it as the same kind of process, starting slow and building their understanding. Rather I have tried to get the behavior I want NOW, more like gasoline. Thank you for helping me see more clearly now, while I still have time to "back the train up."
